$25 Giveaway Interview Excerpt ROOK by STELLA MacDONALD @memacdonald35 @toobusyreading

rook updatedRook

Could you be the monster to save who you love? Two women, separated by generations, must leave what they know to start a new life. Seventeen-year-old Kate's senior year is ruined when she's moved from the only home she's ever known. After an isolating month alone in her apartment, school starts, but neither her classmates nor her teacher are who they seem. Kali, a single mother living in the nineteenth century wilds of Montana, is stalked by a malicious past. She fights to keep her daughter safe while her freedom is threatened by her less than benevolent benefactor. Both find love, and with it hope, but that is quickly ripped away as one woman must learn the lessons of the other -- before it's too late to save either.

  Excerpt

Is that him? Is he back? My legs jerked, kicking and twitching me around to face the sound. I managed to roll slightly, knocking against a soft, solid object at my feet. It grunted weakly, and immediately I recoiled as though I had been bitten. Squinting, I stared, willing my eyes to find light in the dark, but there was nothing. The sound of the runner drew closer, as if they would trample me any moment. A dim, swaying light appeared through the trees, burning away the inky edges of the deep shadows. When light and sound were almost upon me, branches above me snapped, spraying me in a shower of dried pine needles and snow.

Do you have a secret talent?

My parents bought a piano when I was a senior in high school. I sat down, and tada! I could play by ear. To this day, my son will bring me whatever he's listening to, and we'll work out how to play it on my piano. Usually it's  dubstep, so I show him how to bang the beat out, and I'l play while we've got it rocking out on the stereo.

Is there a song that really reminds you of your book?

Arise! By Flyleaf. It's too perfect!

What was the easiest thing about writing this book?

The whole story came in chunks. I rode the train to school every day, and there's nothing better for imagination than complete boredom. I then had great beta-readers and an excellent editor.

Is there a word you love to use?

Well, it's a name actually. In Jordan, I had a friend that lived in a neighborhood called Jabel Webda. I don't know why I like to say that so much, but I do! Amman is super hilly, and many of the neighborhoods have â Jabel❠(mountain) in their name. I never did learn what Webda meant.

Any real or imaginary pets?

We have two old labs, and a dachshund. We had a Great Dane we lost last July, and we were broken hearted. However, last week we got a puppy. So nice to have a baby in the house again!

  4. I am a dubstep fan also and would love to be able to bring that sound to life via piano. Do you have a favorite track? I discovered Flyleaf when Amazon offered a free MP3 (different genre but I enjoy all kinds of sound).
