WoW Alice in Zombieland by Gena Showalter @genashowalter @harlequinteen

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Book Description

September 25, 2012 Harlequin Teen

She won’t rest until she’s sent every walking corpse back to its grave. Forever.

Had anyone told Alice Bell that her entire life would change course between one heartbeat and the next, she would have laughed. From blissful to tragic, innocent to ruined? Please. But that’s all it took. One heartbeat. A blink, a breath, a second, and everything she knew and loved was gone.

Her father was right. The monsters are real….

To avenge her family, Ali must learn to fight the undead. To survive, she must learn to trust the baddest of the bad boys, Cole Holland. But Cole has secrets of his own, and if Ali isn’t careful, those secrets might just prove to be more dangerous than the zombies….

I wish I could go back and do a thousand things differently.
I'd tell my sister no.
I'd never beg my mother to talk to my dad.
I'd zip my lips and swallow those hateful words.
Or, barring all of that, I'd hug my sister, my mom and my dad one last time.
I'd tell them I love them.
I wish... Yeah, I wish.

BOOK TRAILER & AUDIO EXCERPT Fated by Alyson Noel @MacmillanAudio @alysonnoel @StMartinsPress

GIVEAWAY Betrayed by Ednah Walters WIN $100 to Amazon

Book Description

June 5, 2012 Guardian Legacy
Lil isn't just an average teenager. She's one of the Nephilim--the descendants of humans and angels--which gives her some serious psi skills and a mission for redemption. Just when Lil thinks she's found a balance between her normal life with human friends and her training to become a Guardian, she's warned that someone close to her will betray her. When the boy she loves starts acting strangely and one of her human friends acquires a supernatural ability, Lil begins to realize that someone is manipulating the people she loves... and won't stop until she's been lured to the dark side.

 About the Author

Ednah Walter taught herself to write fiction after she finished college and decided to be a stay-at-home mom. When she's not knee-deep in battles between Guardians and demons, she writes contemporary romance (the Fitzgerald Family series). When not writing, Ednah Walters spends time with her husband, five children, and two cats. She lives in a picturesque valley in Utah.

A Note From Ednah:
I grew up reading Nancy Drew and Hardy boys mysteries and fell in love with books

I enjoy good love stories, tingly mysteries and epic adventures. When I finished my college and decided to be a stay-at-home mother, I devoured books like they were going out of production, until reading just wasn't enough. So I started to write.

I've written picture books (unpublished), contemporary and romantic suspense (under the pen name E. B. Walters), and finally YA fantasy (as Ednah Walters).

AWAKENED (2010) is the prequel to the YA series about the Nephilim, The Guardian Legacy series. BETRAYED(book # 1) is now available wherever books are sold, HUNTED (book # 2) will be released in February 2013 andFORGOTTEN (later in 2013).

My adult contemporary with or without suspense is about a west coast Irish-American family series. I've published four Fitzgerald books: SLOW BURN (April 5th 2011), MINE UNTIL DAWN (June 29th 2011), KISS ME CRAZY (Sept 25th 2011) and DANGEROUS LOVE (Jan 29th 2012)

When I'm not writing, I do things with my family, five children and my darling husband of 18 years. I live in a picturesque valley in northern Utah, the setting for my YA series.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:
Just like Awakened, Betrayed has risen above all the other books in this genre. She has created such an amazing world for her Guardians & demons where good and evil are not as simple as it seems they should be. ~J. Whitus (Book Junkies) Walking On Bookshelves

I just love a spunky heroine so I was excited to keep reading about Lil, the demon hunter I got to know in Awakened (book one of The Guardian Legacy series). Walters takes the story and world she built so well in Awakened and adds in an intense plot with lots of twists to make for a strong sequel.~ Kelli (I'd So Rather Be Reading)

Lil is one of my favorite female leads, with all of the traits that you want a strong female lead to have. She's smart, strong, loyal and doesn't know how to back down.~ Missy (Missy's Reads & Reviews)

Lil has her work cut out for her in this book and she never failed me once!

There is action in this book as well as a lot of emotional turmoil.~ Cathy Garcia (Goodreads Review: HERE)

Author Daniel A. Cohen
Daniel A. Cohen was just your average business student. Microeconomics, finance, marketing… you name it, he had to do a PowerPoint presentation on it. One dark and stormy night, he was bitten by the radioactive realization that memorizing business jargon could possibly be the most boring activity known to man.

After gaining eagle-eye vision, abs that could grate cheese, and a talent for imagining things (including his cheese-grating abs), he wrote his first novel and began his epic battle against the formidable business jargon. He continues to fight the good fight by playing saxophone and writing YA fantasy, forever hoping his Veil trilogy will help inspire others to join his cause.

BOOK TRAILER TUESDAY Of Poseidon by Anna Banks @byannabanks @mackidsbooks

OH! truly awesomeness here!

Check out my review that just posted as well!

BOOK REVIEW Of Poseidon by Anna Banks @byannabanks @mackidsbooks

Book Description

May 22, 2012
Galen, a Syrena prince, searches land for a girl he's heard can communicate with fish. It’s while Emma is on vacation at the beach that she meets Galen. Although their connection is immediate and powerful, Galen's not fully convinced that Emma's the one he's been looking for. That is, until a deadly encounter with a shark proves  that Emma and her Gift may be the only thing that can save his kingdom. He needs her help--no matter what the risk.

About the Author
Anna Banks grew up in a small town called Niceville (yes, really). She now lives in Crestview, Florida, with her husband and their daughter. This is her debut novel.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT
Emma is a klutz, pure and simple, so when she goes goes on vacation to Florida with her BFF, Chloe, she runs smack into the cutest guy she has ever seen.  Chloe is unfortunately attacked by a shark and Emma orders the shark away it listens!  She doesn't quite get this at first especially since Chloe dies of her wounds.  Galen, the cute dude, is searching for her but doesn't realize Emma is the one he is looking for until the incident.  He turns out to be Syrena (merman) and it turns out Emma is a decedent of Poseidon which gives her the ability to communicate with fish.  Which puts them on a crash course towards intimacy or at least Galen must convince her that she is special.  The story is told in alternating view points between Galen and Emma which is quite insightful.
There are also wonderful secondary characters like Rayna, Galen's twin sister and her boyfriend, Toraf.  Rayna is a total you-know-what, while Toraf is a giant sweetie with the ability to track anything under the sea. Ok, stop singing the annoying Disney song right now!  And just like in a Disney film, the mothers are nonexistent.  Rayna speaks her mind and doesn't keep anything a secret which is something Galen is way too good at.  He must convince Emma that she is stronger than she thinks and her destiny is something that must be fulfilled.  Of course,  they fall for each other and it looks like they will never get together but like in any good fairy tale there are obstacles that each must overcome.  I have to say the chemistry between the two is extremely well done!
Overall, I really enjoyed this sweet read.  This is only one of three mermaid tales that I have really enjoyed.  You can check out MaryJanice Davidson's adult one about Fred or Tera Lynn Childs' fantastic YA series about Lily.  There is a lot of heavy petting and a mention or two of alcohol but nothing really serious.  Um, launguage, yes, Emma does have a mouth at times but only at appropriate times.  I guess this is one for more mature teens.  I can't wait for the next one to arrive sometime in the future!

I've never been a big fan of talking about myself, but if you really want to know, here are some random tidbits about me:

  • I'm a California girl. This generally means I talk too fast and use "like" a lot.
  • I have my doctorate in molecular anthropology. Translation: I sequence dead people's DNA and spend a whole lot of time in a lab, which I love.
  • I've been writing since I was 11 years old. It's my hobby, my passion, and I'm so happy to get to share my work!
  • My other passion is teaching. There's nothing more fun than getting a classroom of college kids fired up about anthropology!
  • If I could have a super-power, it would totally be flying. Which is a little strange, because I'm terrified of heights.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

After being dragged to movie location shoots around the world be her mother, Jennika, Daire, has what appears to be a psychotic break and attacks a teen heartthrob on the set the day of her sixteenth birthday.  After freaking out again, Jennika takes Daire to live with her grandmother, Paloma.  Daire's parents were never married and she was born when Jennika was only sixteen.  Paloma is an American Native healer and brings Daire's health around while teaching her ancient mystical ways.  The psychotic break that Daire has been having are actually her seeing on another plane.  The story follows Daire and her awakening to these mystical powers and her destined fight to save the community of Enchantment, New Mexico from evil.

Basically, this is a story of good versus evil and it says so right in the story. There are two evil twins, Cade and Dace, that were separated at birth and brought up as light and dark.  As Daire acclimates to her new environment and powers, she finds a few friends that help her along the way.  I really enjoyed the Native American mythology presented along with the story but I almost didn't even start to read this one because of the dense synopsis at the beginning of the book that explained each animal spirit.  I did dig in at the first chapter and almost quit again because of the tiny, tiny print of this advance reader copy.  I hope that the final print has a more readable size.  Ok, those are really nitpicky things but it could have derailed a really good story.

This is a much heavier reading experience than Noel's other works of Riley Bloom and the Immortal series.  It is a typical teen paranormal romance with a love triangle but the details surrounding it are quite intriguing.  I love the character of Xochitl, who is blind but can see far beyond without her vision.  The story is pretty fast paced once you get into it.  I look forward to the next installment in six months.
