MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

After hearing about horse shows from my niece and wondering why there aren't more horse themed books for teens, well, I was thrilled to be offered this one from Bloomsbury.  Take a group of girls, some with more money than sense, throw in world class athletic ability and stir in some mean girls and you have a story that is hard to put down.  Tommi, an heiress, tries to overcome the fact that she can have anything she wants by training a horse by herself to prove her worth.  Unfortunately, she gets sidetracked by a guy Alex, who is pretty selfish. Zara, another girl with money and celebrity parents, is trying to put her party girl image behind her and become a responsible rider except she too gets sidetracked by family issues.  Kate, the poor girl, (relatively speaking), must work for everything except that she has secrets and her perfectionism starts to take over her life and possibly ruin her health as well.

The story focuses on the competiveness that occurs in world class riding known as the A Circuit.  Horses are expensive, the care and maintenance is hard work, well, unless you are rich like Zara and Tommi.  Kate must work for everything she gets, but she does have Fitz, a barn worker to help her out and he does sound really hot.  Kate is the character I was drawn to most.  She has an almost OCD like perfectionism about her and when that evolves into an eating disorder, it is handled expertly by the authors.  You can tell they poured their knowledge and expertise into each chapter. Even though I am not a horse person, my best friend was a competitive rider and reading this brought back a lot of memories of watching her care for her horses and her rides.

Overall, I enjoyed the characters and the competitive horse riding gives a new twist to the current crop of teen angst novels.  I did feel like I wanted to yell at all of them at times to wake up and stop feeling sorry for themselves.  Tommi and Zara have a completely set of issues with mostly absent parents while Kate has control issues.  There are mentions of alcohol, sexual situations, and some langues, but nothing too harsh.  I would recommend this for those teens older than 13.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

****probably has spoilers, so just go with that*****

 Amazing.

That is all this review needs is that one word.  I am amazed that I had Delirium sitting on my shelf since it first came out and didn't pick it up until I had Pandemonium in my hands.  I admit I didn't read Delirium until after I read Pandemonium.  Did it ruin it for me?  Nope, not one bit.  I think I might have enjoyed it a bit more but that would have been hard since I clicked instantly with the story and the characters.   So keep your slings and arrows to yourself and don't come hunt me down for that sacrilege.  I fully repent.

Lena is barely alive, Alex is gone and most likely dead.  She finds herself in the care of a collection of revolutionaries in the Wild.  In the collective, it is all for one, one for all and there is a strong leadership in place that is making plans is trying to fight those who rule.  Although those plans aren't fully known to Lena, she knows she is better off in the Wilds as an Invalid than in the City where everyone is in the process of being CURED for the deliria.  The story is told though alternating chapters of Lena in the Wild and then working for the Resistance.  The could have been horrible sequencing but it really did work for this story.  While working undercover for the resistance, Lena meets and saves Julian, the leader's son and that opens up a whole new can of worms since towards the end she discovers that Alex is not quite dead.

The world of Delirium is a quite fascinating dystopian one where love is considered a disease and the only cure is to have surgery which could possibly kill or maim.  This book is a real page turner (I hate that term, but nothing else will work for this one).  It didn't take me long at all to read it straight through since there is so much action and you felt like you were running with Lena as she is fighting for the resistance.  There are so many little twists and turns with amazing secondary characters and location descriptions that seemed to read more of a movie plot than anything else.  I am now desperately waiting for the conclusion!

Waiting on Wednesday: Social Suicide by Gemma Halliday @harperteen

"Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we're eagerly anticipating.

This week's pre-publication "can't-wait-to-read" selection is:

Book Description

 April 24, 2012  13 and up  8 and up
Twittercide [twit-er-sahyd]: the killing of one human being by another while the victim is in the act of tweeting.

Call me crazy, but I figured writing for the Herbert Hoover High Homepage would be a pretty sweet gig. Pad the resume for college applications, get a first look at the gossip column, spend some time ogling the paper's brooding bad-boy editor, Chase Erikson. But on my first big story, things went...a little south. What should have been a normal interview with Sydney Sanders turned into me discovering the Homecoming Queen-hopeful dead in her pool. Electrocuted while Tweeting. Now, in addition to developing a reputation as HHH's resident body finder, I'm stuck trying to prove that Sydney's death wasn't suicide.

I'm starting to long for the days when my biggest worry was whether the cafeteria was serving pizza sticks or Tuesday Tacos...

REVIEW: Partials By Dan Wells @harperteen

 Description

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials—engineered organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to only tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a decade. Our time is running out.
Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic-in-training, is on the front lines of this battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws have pushed what's left of humanity to the brink of civil war, and she's not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will find that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them—connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.
Dan Wells, acclaimed author of I Am Not a Serial Killer, takes readers on a pulsepounding journey into a world where the very concept of what it means to be human is in question—one where our humanity is both our greatest liability and our only hope for survival.

About the Author

Dan Wells is the author of the John Cleaver series: I Am Not a Serial Killer, Mr. Monster, and I Don't Want To Kill You. He has been nominated for both the Hugo and the Campbell Award and has won two Parsec Awards for his podcast Writing Excuses. He plays a lot of games, reads a lot of books, and eats a lot of food, which is pretty much the ideal life he imagined for himself as a child.

MY THOUGHTS

LOVED IT

Like many dystopians thrillers for young adults these days, this one brings in all of the big guns.  Genetically manufactured robots(?) known as Partials are human like with emotions and have taken over earth since they bring with them a virus that decimates the population along with death to the point there are very few of either existing since the Partials have a built in expiration date.  The humans can't maintain their population since only a few of them are immune to the virus and babies die within days of birth from it.  So Kira, a sixteen year old medic in training is on the trail for a cure.  With the capture of Samm, a partial, she begins to come closer and closer to a cure but lacks a bit of research.  Her lab is blown up and a riot is started as a cover to save Samm from certain death although she doesn't know it, she is part of the Partials plan for their own cure.  Whew!

This really reminded my of Frankenstein, when the monster discovers he has feelings and the townspeople revolt against the creation of artificial life.  It brings into question, the exact meaning of life.  So if lab created life has all of the qualities of humans, what makes them not human?  The plot moved along these lines but at times it was a bit plodding.  I wish it had moved a bit faster but I will definitely want to read the next in the series just to find out what happens next.  The end of the book has Kira questioning herself and her own humanity, so I really want to see where this goes.  I like both of the main characters, the secondary characters were pretty forgettable though.  Each side has their own nasty and unlikable leader and I am still not certain which is good or evil, so that in itself will be interesting to find out.

REVIEW: Under the Never Sky by Veronica Rossi @harperteen

 Description

Since she’d been on the outside, she’d survived an Aether storm, she’d had a knife held to her throat, and she’d seen men murdered. This was worse. Exiled from her home, the enclosed city of Reverie, Aria knows her chances of surviving in the outer wasteland—known as The Death Shop—are slim. If the cannibals don’t get her, the violent, electrified energy storms will. She’s been taught that the very air she breathes can kill her. Then Aria meets an Outsider named Perry. He’s wild—a savage—and her only hope of staying alive. A hunter for his tribe in a merciless landscape, Perry views Aria as sheltered and fragile—everything he would expect from a Dweller. But he needs Aria’s help too; she alone holds the key to his redemption. Opposites in nearly every way, Aria and Perry must accept each other to survive. Their unlikely alliance forges a bond that will determine the fate of all who live under the never sky. In her enthralling debut, Veronica Rossi sends readers on an unforgettable adventure set in a world brimming with harshness and beauty. This enhanced edition contains the full text of the novel, plus this exclusive content:--A Q&A with Veronica Rossi--Veronica’s Favorite Things--A Playlist Inspired by Under the Never Sky--Behind-the-Scenes Development of the “Smarteye”--A Video Look Inside Veronica Rossi’s Writing Process--A Sneak Peek at Book Two: Through the Ever Night

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Aria lives in a post apocalyptic world where the Earth has become so damaged with some sort of solar flare activity (at least this is how I understood the storms) called the Aether which causes the landscape to catch on fire and become charged with electricity. There are two main factions that inhabit the planet.  Those who live in inside enclosed pods that protect the inhabitants from the storms and those who live outside in the elements.  These outsiders have developed skills and evolved super senses to help exist in a mostly ruined climate.  Those that live in safety have done so at a price since the genetics that make humans able to adapt has been bred out.   The pods, for all their relative safety from the storms have become breeding grounds for psychological breaks.  Her mother, a geneticist, sees this coming and tries to protect her and in some ways she does.

Aria finds herself at odds with the leader's son when he breaks and kills. She is essentially sentenced to death, but escapes and by luck or design, she is rescued by outsider, Perry, who saved her once in the pod.  They are from extremely different worlds, so you have the whole Romeo and Juliet thing going on.  The world building is entirely believable and it is so easy to slip into.  The story is told in alternating chapters from each of their point of view which works nicely for this book.

This is one of those books that doesn't catch your attention right away, so for the few chapters, I thought, oh, just another sci fi story for teens, then I become totally wrapped up in the world.  Aria has become one of my favorite female leads.  She starts out weak and then grows immensely taking everything in as she learns to cope with her whole world turned upside down.  Perry also grows into a new role as he finds he can almost trust her which for him is groundbreaking since his history has been one of incredible loss.   Now, I can't wait until the next in the series.

GIVEAWAY! 50th Anniversary A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine L'Engle Swag @MacKidsBooks

Description

It was a dark and stormy night; Meg Murry, her small brother Charles Wallace, and her mother had come down to the kitchen for a midnight snack when they were upset by the arrival of a most disturbing stranger.

"Wild nights are my glory," the unearthly stranger told them. "I just got caught in a downdraft and blown off course. Let me sit down for a moment, and then I'll be on my way. Speaking of ways, by the way, there is such a thing as a tesseract."

A tesseract (in case the reader doesn't know) is a wrinkle in time. To tell more would rob the reader of the enjoyment of Miss L'Engle's unusual book. A Wrinkle in Time, winner of the Newbery Medal in 1963, is the story of the adventures in space and time of Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin O'Keefe (athlete, student, and one of the most popular boys in high school). They are in search of Meg's father, a scientist who disappeared while engaged in secret work for the government on the tesseract problem.
A Wrinkle in Time is the winner of the 1963 Newbery Medal.

About the Author

Madeleine L’Engle (1918-2007) was the Newbery Medal-winning author of more than 60 books, including the much-loved A Wrinkle in Time. Born in 1918, L’Engle grew up in New York City, Switzerland, South Carolina and Massachusetts.  Her father was a reporter and her mother had studied to be a pianist, and their house was always full of musicians and theater people. L’Engle graduated cum laude from Smith College, then returned to New York to work in the theater. While touring with a play, she wrote her first book, The Small Rain, originally published in 1945. She met her future husband, Hugh Franklin, when they both appeared in The Cherry Orchard.
Upon becoming Mrs. Franklin, L’Engle gave up the stage in favor of the typewriter. In the years her three children were growing up, she wrote four more novels. Hugh Franklin temporarily retired from the theater, and the family moved to western Connecticut and for ten years ran a general store. Her book Meet the Austins, an American Library Association Notable Children's Book of 1960, was based on this experience.
Her science fantasy classic A Wrinkle in Time was awarded the 1963 Newbery Medal. Two companion novels, A Wind in the Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet (a Newbery Honor book), complete what has come to be known as The Time Trilogy, a series that continues to grow in popularity with a new generation of readers. Her 1980 book A Ring of Endless Light won the Newbery Honor. L’Engle passed away in 2007 in Litchfield, Connecticut.
