Crossroads Saga

crossroads ting  Crossroads (Book 1)

Can two worlds collide in dreams? Crossroads, Between, Beyond, Eternity, Halo City-novella Protecting her from the fallen was his duty. Falling in love was never part of his plan. Loving her was forbidden. Being with her was all that mattered, even if it meant he would be exiled for all eternity. Claudia Emerson's life is about to change when her good friend, who coincidentally shares the same first and last name, dies in a tragic accident after the homecoming dance. Distraught at the loss of her friend, Claudia's dreams become tumultuous, and through them she mysteriously travels to another world called Crossroads. Unknown to her, Crossroads is like a second heaven, a place between heaven and earth, where the souls of humans in comas or near death experiences may wander. There, she unexpectedly meets Michael, a nephilim--half angel, half human. It turns out that this isn't her first visit, which is an enigma, for she has no recollection of being there, and is told that no human has crossed over...until Claudia. Now that she's been there, fallen and demons are after her, suspecting she must be special, and it is up to Michael and the other nephilim to protect her. Her dream becomes a nightmare as more secrets are revealed about who she really is, and the true identities of the people she loves most. The situation becomes even more complicated when she is unable to hinder her feelings for her swoon-worthy guardian angel. Can Michael fight his growing feelings for Claudia and protect her as a guardian angel should, or will he be too blinded by human emotions and the struggles of being who he is?

  Book Trailer

  Teaser

Though Phillip had already told me that I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between an alkin and a fallen, it was confirmed as I watched the battle. They looked just like the alkins as the two sides battled with swords. Watching, I noticed that Michael had one too, but where had it come from? “No!” Michael shouted, suddenly standing directly in front of me. “You don’t need her. She’s just a human.” “Get them!” Aden shouted again. During the entire fight Michael stayed by my side, protecting me. They fought so swiftly that even with my flashlight it was hard to distinguish alkins from the fallen. I focused intently, trying to figure out who was who, but it was no use. They were too fast for human eyes. I pointed the flashlight, hoping to blind or distract them, but that also proved to be pointless. It was only useful for my vision. In the blink of an eye they were here, there and everywhere. The clanging of swords colliding was painful to hear. As the screeching sounds continued, all I could see were sparks as the swords made contact, as if we were in the middle of a lightning storm. Fearful of any alkin getting hurt, I covered my ears, hoping that it would end soon. Suddenly, Aden raised his hand toward the stars, and the fallen stopped. The sounds of the swords crashing against each other came to a dead halt. Aden started circling around Michael and me. As he drew closer, I could see that he looked exactly as I remembered him from my dream. The wrinkles on his forehead defined his age, and though I conceived him as evil, his voice scared me more than his appearance. Aden never lifted a finger to fight; instead, he relied on the fallen to carry out his battle strategies. “Michael, come with me. I’ll give you anything you want.” “There is nothing I want from you.” “They’ve turned you against me. I should have killed you when I had the chance.” Aden’s eyes raged with anger. “They didn’t turn me against you. I did it of my own free will.” “Move out of my way!” Aden shouted. “You’ll have to go through me first!” As Aden continued to circle around us, I could sense movement from the fallen, edging closer to Michael and me. The alkin must have sensed it too as they positioned themselves right behind us and immediately began to attack the fallen. Michael moved me to the left and then to the right, fighting while shielding me. Though the fallen were fewer in number than before, they were retaliating in full force. In the midst of all the chaos, I lost my grip on the flashlight, and it tumbled off the cliff. Instinctively I reached for it, and in that split second someone or something collided against me, and I plummeted off the cliff. Gravity was pulling me faster than my body could resist. I’d always heard that at the moment of death, one’s life flashed before their eyes; all the moments that had brought them to that point, big or small. All I could think of was death itself and the one person who had changed my life forever—Michael.

Giveaway Review GLITTER GIRL by Stephen Webb & Toni Runkle @writtenbyton i@kidslitwebb @JabberwockyKids

Book Description

 December 3, 2013

True Confessions of a Trendsetter

Hi! I'm Kat. Welcome to my blog. I may be from a small town but I'm also Glitter Girl Cosmetics' newest trendsetter. Thanks to my flair for fashion and my popular style blog, I've been chosen to be an Alpha Girl, which means I get to try out all the Glitter Girl products before they hit the stores.

Forty-eight hours after she blogs about the goodies in the new line, every girl at Kat's school is sporting the gear. Kat's popularity skyrockets, but Jules—Kat's BFF—seems to be the only one who's not buying into the Glitter Girl lifestyle. Is Kat willing to sacrifice her friendship for life in the fab lane?

About the Authors

Toni Runkle
began her writing career at age 4 when she scrawled on a lampshade in crayon. Despite getting in BIG trouble, she continued writing (books, blogs, screenplays). She lives in Valencia, California with her husband and daughter who are understandably grateful that she now writes on computers instead of furniture.

Hailing from a small town in South Dakota, Stephen Webb now makes his home in the small town of Los Angeles, where he enjoys annoying his wife and daughter by singing show tunes at the top of his lungs. He loves softball, cheeseburgers, and his family, although not necessarily in that order.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Kat has developed an incredible following on her style blog at the age of fourteen, so when a giant box from a new company called Glitter Girl shows up with an invitation to be the face of their product line, she is giddy with excitement.  Then Chelsea, the vice-president in charge of marketing the line shows up, things get weird for Kat.  Her best friend and next door neighbor, Jules, sees some changes in Kat as she gets trapped into the whole glamour of the launch. Jules has a falling out with Kat as she chooses the Glitter Girl launch extravaganza over her birthday party which falls on the same day.  The two have never had a party apart since they have lived next door to each other.

There are lots and lots of little details that make Kat really human and likable.  She hates it when people are mean, yet she falls into the same trap when egged on by Chelsea.  She becomes mean to Jules, which makes her feel horrible.  At fourteen, she is not above being manipulated but her parents must have done a few things right since she does have great empathy for others around her.  Her parents comes off as a bit superficial at first.  Her father travels constantly in order to make money and her mother is placated by spending it.   By the end of this story, Kat has managed to turn this around.

Overall, this is a story that will make you feel good and teach young teens that peer pressure can affect even the most in tune teen.  As Kat becomes true to herself, she becomes stronger and happier.  This is also a story about the worth of being popular and the cost.   I would recommend this to reluctant readers since there is a bit of a fantasy angle that most young teen girls will enjoy.  It is very clean, with just a kiss or two thrown in.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Nessa Joanne Mulholland has a slight Marilyn Monroe addiction and she tries to channel her no matter what in a sort of "What Would Marilyn Do"system.  She is thirteen and soon to be fourteen, has just shipped out to a new location with her professor father as he travels to his new job in France as well as conducting a study about vacation romances.  Her whole life is turned upside down when she spots Holly Isle on the boat and Holly actually speaks to her and OMG!  she befriends Nessa.  Holly even has a high school aged nephew named Marc travelling with her.

In homage to Gentleman Prefer Blondes, Nessa dreams up a system to help save Holly's love life since she has just dumped fiancee number three.  I know, this is a bit of an extreme fantasy that a thirteen year old girl can be BFF with a movie star but the story makes you believe it can happen and Nessa has such a good heart and brain that the whole thing seems really plausible.  There is such chemistry between her and Marc and when they kissed, it was just so sweet.  What wasn't sweet was when she got caught up in her lies after trying to fix Holly up with her personal paparazzi, Ted.

The ending, while a bit predictable to my grown up eyes, is just what a younger teen would demand.  This is an easy to read and fun story which is perfect for reluctant readers.  It is a pretty clean read with just a few kisses worked in and some mentions of adults using alcohol.  Do yourself a favor and stock up on some maraschino cherries before you start this one since you will be craving them as you get into the story.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Now that Violet's mother, Evelyn, has returned, she is having some serious issues that most teens would have resolved by age sixteen.  She also has the weight of the world on her shoulders as well as feeling betrayed by everyone close to her.  The Grigori are bent on bringing Violet around to their thinking but the politics of behind them are anything but honorable and she feels like she is being set up for failure.  Lincoln is still in love with her but fated to the fact that they can never be lovers.  Phoenix has reappeared in a most sinister fashion and he has his mother, Lilith to thank for this.

Children are disappearing at an alarming rate around New York and as Linc and Vi investigate, they uncover an unholy plot by Lilith to increase her power.  The Academy run by the Grigori and the Elders are not entirely in her corner since she is something of a wild card.  With all of her faults, Violet has more integrity than the oldest Elder.  This latest installment will bring you to tears at times, while cheering Violet on as well.  The surprising part is how much Phoenix cares for her and protects her.

This story only made me want to read more about Violet and her world and to see if she can conquer all of the evil in the world.  She is not perfect and doesn't pretend to be.  The characters are all put through tests and not all of them survive.  I can wait to see how her relationship with Linc and her mother develops.  Parents:  this is best suited for mature teens since there is alcohol mentioned, sexual situations, language and violence.

Review Giveaway SPLENDOR by ELANA K ARNOLD @ElanaKArnold @BookNerdTours #NerdTour

TOUR SCHEDULE

Synopsis

Splendor, the stunning sequel to Sacred, is a story about changing friendships, family, romance, passion, the study of Kabbalah, and self-discovery.

Sometimes the answers we seek aren’t ours to find. . . .

Scarlett loves her boyfriend, the dashing, mysterious Will Cohen. But now he’s gone east for college, and Scarlett is stuck home on Catalina Island. Senior year should be a breeze, but between dealing with her parents’ separation and her wild best friend, Lily, things are off to a rocky start. And then there’s Gunner. Dangerous, dark, ferociously attractive Gunner. Lily’s potential boyfriend, Gunner . . .
Scarlett distracts herself by spending time with her horse and delving into ecstatic mysticism, a way to practice Kabbalah. Through this practice, she hopes to learn to control her emotions, and begin to make sense of her place in the world. But Scarlett’s world is increasingly unrecognizable.
Are Lily and Scarlett becoming too different to stay friends? Is Will still the love of Scarlett’s life, even though she has feelings for Gunner? Does being in love mean only being attracted to one person? The more Scarlett questions, the fewer answers there seem to be.

Praise for Splendor:

"As in Arnold’s earlier Sacred, teens will gravitate toward Scarlett and her problems. Arnold has painted a very realistic picture of teenage girls and their conflicting emotions. . . . Fans of the first novel will appreciate continuing Scarlett’s story and finding some closure with this sequel. Readers unfamiliar with Sacred will still be able to enjoy Splendor.”—VOYA

Praise for Sacred:

"Will appeal to many teens, especially fans of the Twilight series."--Booklist

"Filled with tension and angst. . . . Readers will be looking for the next installment."--School Library Journal

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Scarlett has grown up on Catalina Island right off the coast of California surrounded by nature and a small knit community. After a troubling summer , she has just started her senior year and kissed her first boyfriend, Will,  good by as he heads off to Yale.  They text and talk, but is getting the feeling that the distance may become a problem.  On top of this, her parents have separated, with her mother moving to Los Angeles to take up her career as a lawyer since the Bed and Breakfast they run has fallen onto hard times from the neglect of the past year.  Her older brother has recently died from an aneurysm and it has torn the family apart.  Her best friend, Lily, has returned from a trip to Amsterdam a changed person, and more wild than Scarlett could ever image.

With all of these changes, Martin, Will's father, has directed her to a friend that practices Kabbalah in hopes that she will find some peace.  Will also has a secret that might be driving the pair apart:  he can see horrible things before they happen and is driven to prevent them.  This is a gift that cost his own mother her life.  So along with this insight, a new boy starts to pay attention to Scarlett and now she is questioning if her love for Will is really true. Newly transplanted from the UK,  Gunner is present and doesn't have the problems that she and Will must now face.  As Scarlett tries to answer questions about her feelings, she also is trying to find the answer to the meaning of life.

This story is filled with beautiful descriptions as well as perfectly balanced dialogue.  The bits of paranormal are woven in so naturally that the gift Will has just seems natural.  The small town vibe of Catalina is a perfect background to Scarlett's own struggles with growing up in a now broken family.  I really enjoyed the mysticism and how it all worked in the plot.  These characters all seem like kids I know with all of the flaws and accomplishments they should have. I look forward to reading more about them.

Olivia
He tilts my chin up so my eyes meet his, his thumb brushing lightly across my lips. I close my eyes. I know Z is trouble. I know that being with him is going to get me into trouble. I don’t care.
At least at this moment, I don’t care.

Tossed from foster home to foster home, Olivia’s seen a lot in her sixteen years. She’s hardened, sure, though mostly just wants to fly under the radar until graduation. But her natural ability with computers catches the eye of Z, a mysterious guy at her new school. Soon, Z has brought Liv into his team of hacker elite—break into a few bank accounts, and voila, he drives a motorcycle. Follow his lead, and Olivia might even be able to escape from her oppressive foster parents. As Olivia and Z grow closer, though, so does the watchful eye of Bill Sykes, Z’s boss. And he’s got bigger plans for Liv…

Z
I can picture Liv’s face: wide-eyed, trusting. Her smooth lips that taste like strawberry Fanta.
It was just a kiss. That’s all. She’s just like any other girl.
Except that she’s not.
Thanks to Z, Olivia’s about to get twisted.
