Book Description

April 2, 2013 Eve Trilogy

How far will you go when you have nothing left to lose?

When she lost her soul mate, Caleb, Eve felt like her world had ended. Trapped in the palace, forced to play the part of the happy, patriotic princess of The New America—and the blushing bride of her father's top adviser—Eve's whole life is a lie. The only thing that keeps her going is Caleb's memory, and the revolution he started.

Now, Eve is taking over where Caleb left off. With the help of Moss, an undercover subversive in the King's court, she plots to take down The New America, beginning with the capital, the City of Sand. Will Eve be able to bring about a new, free world when she's called upon to perform the ultimate act of rebellion—killing her father?

In Rise, Eve must choose who to leave behind, who to save, and who to fight as Anna Carey's epic tale of romance and sacrifice in the chilling dystopia of The New America comes to a stunning conclusion.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

+++spoilers if you haven't read Eve or Once+++

Caleb is shot in Eve's arms at the end of Once and they are quickly separated.  The feeling of hate for her father are now intensified to a death wish for him and with the help of rebels' leader Moss, she intends to act on it.  Her marriage to Charles is a sham and even still, the both like and respect each other.  With Eve's brutal honesty to Clara about Charles, the two begin to forge a relationship based on trust that for both is hard won.  The revolutionaries are also working to end her father's rule as well.  It is amazing to see how far Eve has developed since I first met her. You can see just how much she is like her father with a will and strength that she decides to use for society rather than her own gain.

Eve struggles with the knowledge that she might have cost many lives when she is force to give away one of the rebels' tunnels into the city, but Moss doesn't let her dwell on that fact and encourages her to continue fighting against her father, even committing the ultimate sacrifice and assassinating him. Eve discovers she is pregnant with Caleb's baby and Charles gallantly takes responsibility.  When the attempt fails and more of her rebel friends are lost in the fight, she escapes with Clara and some of the school girls that have been recently brought into the capitol.

Wow, there is so much excitement and action in the conclusion to this trilogy.  I love how Eve has grown and fights for others.  In her dystopian world, death is a daily occurrence and just surviving another day is miraculous.  Clara also develops into a whole character here as well and I found I really liked her.  I did not see this ending coming, not be a long shot.  I was so happy it ended this way but I would still like get a bit more detail on the aftermath.  Sorry, no clues there about the actual ending.

BOOK REVIEW Once (Eve #2) by Anna Carey @byannacarey @harperteen

Book Description

July 3, 2012 Eve

Sixteen years have passed since a deadly virus wiped out most of the Earth’s population. After learning of the terrifying part she and her classmates were fated to play in the rebuilding of New America, eighteen-year-old Eve fled to the wilds and Califia, a haven for women determined to live outside the oppressive rule of the king of New America. However, her freedom came at a price: she was forced to leave Caleb, the boy she loves, wounded and alone at the city gates. Eve quickly learns that Califia may not be as safe as it seems and soon finds herself in the City of Sand and the palace of the king. There she uncovers the real reason he was so intent on her capture, and the unbelievable role he intends her to fill. When she is finally reunited with Caleb, they will enact a plan as daring as it is dangerous. But will Eve once again risk everything—her freedom, her life—for love?

Brimming with danger and star-crossed romance, and featuring a vivid dystopian landscape, this electrifying follow-up to Eve, which bestselling author Lauren Kate called “a gripping, unforgettable adventure—and a fresh look at what it means to love” is sure to appeal to fans who crave the high-stakes adventure of The Hunger Games and the irresistible love story of Romeo and Juliet.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

***slight spoilers***

Once picks up right where Eve left off.  Eve is now in Califia (really San Francisco), and although she can't see Caleb, they find a way and conspire to escape when Eve overhears the women conspire to turn her over to the king of New America.  Well, she tries to escape but is captured and taken to the city in the sand (really Las Vegas).   She does reunite with Arden right before her escape and Arden is also captured and returned back to the "school" .  Eve finally meets the King who pronounces her his daughter (ok--no way to explain my thoughts without this fact) and she is declared the Princess and renamed Genevieve.  Trumpets blare, fanfare erupts and Eve throws a hissy fit but at this point she is entitled (literally).

Still, Eve is convinced that the King's vision for a New America involves some really shady, dictator like stuff that is truly evil and she wants no part of it except to bring him down.  Can you say "major daddy issues"?  She escapes the palace (really Cesar's Palace -- bonus points!) and reunites with Caleb after doing some recon and helping out the resistance.  So you have the basic Romeo and Juliet plot going on here with some end of world dystopian, science fiction elements.  Oh and Eve is forced to marry some rich dude in charge of redevelopment.

I have to admit I LOVED this book.  I gave the first book, Eve, 5 stars, but this follow up was a bit predicable for me.  Even though I read it straight though and it really help my attention, some of the plot points were a bit convenient.  I kept expecting more from Caleb but this book is all about Eve.  She doesn't need any knight in shining armor to rescue her and I have high hopes for the third book in the trilogy. I know what I want, now lets see if I get it next year.

    MY THOUGHTS
    ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Eve is set in a dystopian future where the majority of the population has died off in through a viral infection and New America is now run by a despotic man.  The title character of Eve is charm and grace with a beautiful covering and is in a convent type school where she is taught that boys are evil and is lead to believe that she will be part of the country's rebuilding as a teacher.  When she uncovers the horrible truth about what awaits her when she graduates, she flees and meets up with her rival Arden who explains the truth of the school.  Together, they find other young survivors from the apocalypse and  uncover additional horrors as they try to make it to the safety of another part of the country.   Eve becomes attracted and aligns herself with Caleb, a survivor himself, and together they piece together a future- or what they hope might become a future.

Character development is the key to this story from being just another dystopian tale.  I was really moved by Eve and her will to survive and fight for her life.  It could have easily been just another book in a massively populated genre, but I immediately connected with Eve and Caleb and cheered them on even though I was left hanging by the time they reached their supposed promised land.  That didn't quite turn out the way they planned it, but I can't wait for the next in this series to find out exactly what happens next.  So the setting of this book is quite familiar to those of you who have read Wither by Lauren DeStefano or The Handmaiden's Tale by Margaret Atwood, but Carey gets the characters perfectly developed and for me, this made all the difference between being good and excelling.
