MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT
*** possible spoilers if you haven't read The Darkest Minds ***
So, after powering through The Darkest Minds (TDM) and then instantly onto Never Fade, I am still breathless. The virus that has given these kids extraordinary abilities and Ruby is trying to find the source of the disease. The government is fighting within itself and the world is not a pleasant place. In this new dystopian landscape there are still familiar touchstones like the Beatles. Ruby's particular gift is being an "orange" where she can manipulate minds and get information from others. When TDM ended, Ruby has erased Liam's memory of her in his mind. Now it is several months later and Ruby has fallen in with a new group working for the Children's League gaining intelligence and discovering more about her powers.
I was wondering if Liam would ever reconnect with Ruby since erasing someone's mind is a pretty strong signal they never want to see you again. Ruby has grown incredibly more mature, so I had my hopes up. Liam realizes that he is missing something from his memory. Their relationship was a bit bittersweet for me. I really connected with Vida, a smart-talking powerhouse, who just gets right to the point with everything. As Ruby realized the Children's League and their agents want to wipe out the Psi, she tries to make the right choices.
This last book left me with a horrifying feeling that these kids would have to endure even more horrible situations. I would really be more in depth with my review but I don't want to spoil any plot points and I have deleted two paragraphs already that gave out too much information. SIGH. I am really glad I had the chance to read these books together since the flow between the two was perfect. Now, I guess it will be another year before there is another installment. DOUBLE SIGH Parents: this series is best for mature teens since there is language and a lot of graphic violence within horrible landscapes. Fans of Divergent and the Hunger Games will love this one. Expect tears.
