Guest Post & Giveaway by SG ROGERS author of TOURNAMENT OF CHANCE @suzannegrogers WIN $25

Literary, Film, or TV Moments as Inspiration

After I finish a manuscript, I always have a slight moment of consternation. What if the creative well has run dry and I can’t come up with another story idea… ever?  When that happens, I go outside to rake some leaves, read a book, or watch a favorite movie for inspiration.

I’m not as inspired by plots (although some are ingenious) as I am by particular moments in books, movies, or television programs.  When my imagination is fired up over one of these moments, I will lie in bed at night rewriting that scene and playing it repeatedly in my head.  That obsession invariably leads to my next plot.

When two characters have fallen in love and are on the verge of expressing (or better yet, failing to express) their feelings is especially good grist for my mental mill.  I think the best love scenes are those with conflict.  What is preventing these people from coming together? Is it fear of rejection, societal or familial disapproval, or a third party?  Are there additional inner conflicts to add to the mix?

I used to enjoy watching the Battlestar Galactica (2004) miniseries, just aching to see Starbuck and Apollo get it together romantically.  Of course, that was a space opera, so the writers had to continuously keep them apart. Nevertheless, it drove me crazy! I had the same frustration with La Femme Nikita (1997 – 2001).  Would Nikita and Michael ever admit to their feelings for one another? More recently, I finished reading Clockwork Angel and Clockwork Prince, by Cassandra Clare.  I am eagerly awaiting the third book to see the resolution of the brutally painful love triangle between Tessa, Will, and James.

So that vague panic I feel as I’m trying to come up with my next story can usually be eased by reading or watching a scene that gets me fired up.  And if that doesn’t work, I go rake leaves.

Tournament of Chance

In Tournament of Chance, a hunter’s daughter becomes the spark that ignites a revolution—in time.

When a beautiful commoner enters the Tournament of Chance archery competition, her thwarted victory sparks a revolution in the oppressive kingdom of Destiny. Although Heather never believed the legends about the restoration of Ormaria, after three shape-shifting Ormarian wizards awaken from a long magical slumber, she joins their perilous quest to regain the throne. Heather battles vicious predators and angry trolls to free the wizards’ magic, but at a horrendous cost. She is unexpectedly torn from the arms of the man she loves and hurled back in time to fulfill a prophecy not yet written. The ensuing maelstrom tests Heather’s survival skills, wits, and endurance. Will she become an unwritten footnote in history, or can she trust the magic to lead her back to her one true love?
