Book Description
In James Patterson's blockbuster series, fourteen-year-old Maximum Ride, better known as Max, knows what it's like to soar above the world. She and all the members of the "flock"--Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman and Angel--are just like ordinary kids--only they have wings and can fly. It may seem like a dream come true to some, but their lives can morph into a living nightmare at any time...like when Angel, the youngest member of the flock, is kidnapped and taken back to the "School" where she and the others were experimented on by a crew of wack jobs. Her friends brave a journey to blazing hot Death Valley, CA, to save Angel, but soon enough, they find themselves in yet another nightmare--this one involving fighting off the half-human, half-wolf "Erasers" in New York City. Whether in the treetops of Central Park or in the bowels of the Manhattan subway system, Max and her adopted family take the ride of their lives. Along the way Max discovers from her old friend and father-figure Jeb--now her betrayed and greatest enemy--that her purpose is save the world--but can she?

MY THOUGHTS LOVED IT Imagine 6 kids, mostly human with a touch of bird as the result of an experiment gone wrong while they battle and try to find the secret to the School, the evil empire that has done them wrong. This story, which I imagine is directed at boys and trying to make a dent in all the young adult dystopian novels aimed primarily at girls, does make some epic reading. The dialogue is decent and there is a lot of adventure but I am not a fan of overly descriptive stories and that is where this one lost me. If it could have been condensed a bit, it would have been a home run with me for sure, instead it only got me to third. My countdown to the end of the series continues! Every Friday, I will feature a book in the Maximum Ride series and will have a few more giveaways as well!

ReplyDeleteI have to disagree about this being overly descriptive. It lost me, too . . . for not providing enough details. But I do agree that it is, paradoxically enough, very wordy. I felt kind of cheated when I got to the end and read that huge cliffhanger. There was so little substance in the story and the prose of this first installment that the author telling us we had to read the second book to feel full (if you take my meaning) was kind of insulting.
-- JMJ -- THAT is what I was trying to think of to say -- WORDY! I just felt is could have been more concise. TY!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the giveaway. My older son read these and loved them. I would love to win this for my younger son.

Wow, I could say the exact same thing as commenter Bethie. My older son loves this series, and I would like to win it for my younger sons. I'd read it too if I had a copy. Just so I could talk about it with them! Thanks for the chance to win.
ReplyDeleteI'm not entering the giveaway, but I just wanted to say that I really liked this book and my son loved it. He read it in elementary school, and it was his first book on the longer side. Thankfully the one he read had a different cover than this, or else he probably would've resisted reading it.
ReplyDeleteChristy -- I think the new covers are geared towards girls, but I bet they release them all over again with another character on the cover.
ReplyDeleteI have read the second one and I ADORED that one. This has happened to me before with other series, I was intrigued just enough to get me to the next one and then they clicked.
My son enjoyed this series too!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the chance to win! I see this series checked out all the time at my library, but haven't read them yet.
ReplyDeleteI haven't started this series yet, but am planning to. I'm glad the last one is finished because I hate waiting to see what happens and now I can pretty much read them all at once. :) Thanks for the giveaway!
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway!! Haven't read this seies yet, but I think my husband would really enjoy it. Thanks for the chance to win
