Description
A beast. Not quite wolf or bear, gorilla or dog but a horrible new creature who walks upright—a creature with fangs and claws and hair springing from every pore. I am a monster.
You think I'm talking fairy tales? No way. The place is New York City. The time is now. It's no deformity, no disease. And I'll stay this way forever—ruined—unless I can break the spell.
Yes, the spell, the one the witch in my English class cast on me. Why did she turn me into a beast who hides by day and prowls by night? I'll tell you. I'll tell you how I used to be Kyle Kingsbury, the guy you wished you were, with money, perfect looks, and the perfect life. And then, I'll tell you how I became perfectly . . . beastly.

This is a wonderful young adult retelling of Beauty and the Beast which has been modernized perfectly. This is an easy to read story that should be familiar to most teens. There are drugs mentioned since Beauty's father is a drug addict, but the mention is a negative one. Just a few kisses, so nothing much to worry about on the sex front either. You can see Linda bloom like one of Kyle/Adrian's roses as the story develops. I know the upcoming movie (due 3/2011) is going to be wonderful. The actors chosen really look just as the author describes them.
I think this should appeal to everyone who loves a good romance. I am definitely going to look for more books by this author!
ADDED: I read this book when it first came out, so this is my review from then. The movie was originally scheduled for release in 7/2010 and I would have to reread the book, but from what I remember and the short posted on you tube over a year ago, I thought the casting was well done and captured the characters.

Actually the actors don't look just like the way the characters are described in the book. Lindy in the book was fair skinned and had red hair. Vanessa Hudgens is the exact opposite. But the movie still looks good! :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome giveaway! I love this book! Well, I love pretty much any retellings of classic fairy tales, haha.

ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to read this since like, EVER! But unfortunately it's not yet available here in India. Thanks for making it international! I shared the giveaway on Facebook. Here's the link http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=534836881
ReplyDeleteThanks for this great giveaway 'and for making it international, since I'm French, it's pretty great) and for your review !! This book seems awesome . I love retelling of fairy tales .. And I look forward to see the movie adaptation with Alex Pettyfer ;)
ReplyDeleteI read this book when it first came out, and I liked it. Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite stories EVER, but I haven't always liked the re-tellings that come out. I'm excited for the movie, but I'm not crazy about the casting choices. (The fact that she was in High School Musical kind of ruins it for me...)
ReplyDeleteI just saw the preview for this movie :) I'd love to read the book first, though.
