Giveaway Spotlight THE ALMOND TREE by MICHELLE COHEN CORASANTI @mcohencorasanti @toobusyreading

Almond Tree tour

Almond Tree Book CoverThe Almond Tree by Michelle Cohen Corasanti

“An epic drama of the proportions of The Kite Runner… Grabs you from the first page… A gripping and compassionate work of fiction” —Huffington Post

The unforgettable story of a young Palestinian boy whose mathematical gifts allow him to escape the difficulties of life as an Arab Israeli, The Almond Tree is a beautifully crafted debut novel written by a Jewish American woman from the perspective of a Palestinian Muslim male. It is about the power of love, the price of hatred, and the possibility of redemption. Even as a young boy Ahmed Hamid struggles with knowing that he can do nothing to save his friends and family. Coming of age under Israeli martial law, his entire village operates in fear of losing their homes, jobs, and belongings. But more importantly, they fear losing each other. On Ahmed's twelfth birthday, that fear becomes reality. With his father imprisoned, his family's home and possessions confiscated, and his beloved brother Abbas succumbing to hatred in the face of conflict, Ahmed must find a way to care for his family and find a better future for himself. Gifted with a mind that can solve mathematical equations, he uses his intellect to take an inspiring journey that will lead him from his war-torn homeland to a life in America he could never have imagined for himself. A sweeping story of family, love, and friendship told against the devastating backdrop of half a century of conflict, The Almond Tree is a powerful novel that allows us to walk in one extraordinary Palestinian’s shoes and see the world through his eyes. “Corasanti’s accomplished debut novel offers a humanistic look into the Israeli-Palestinian conflict...Sensitive, moving…” —Kirkus Reviews

Excerpt

Mama always said Amal was mischievous. It was a joke we shared as a family – that my sister, just a few years old and shaky on her pudgy legs, had more energy for life than me and my younger brother Abbas combined. So when I went to check on her and she wasn’t in her crib, I felt a fear in my heart that gripped me and would not let go.
It was summer and the whole house breathed slowly from the heat. I stood alone in her room, hoping the quiet would tell me where she’d stumbled off to. A white curtain caught a breeze. The window was open – wide open. I rushed to the ledge, praying that when I looked over she wouldn’t be there, she wouldn’t be hurt. I was afraid to look, but I did anyway because not knowing was worse. Please God, please God, please God…
There was nothing below but Mama’s garden: colourful flowers moving in that same wind.
Downstairs, the air was filled with delicious smells, the big table laden with yummy foods. Baba and I loved sweets, so Mama was making a whole lot of them for our holiday party tonight.
‘Where’s Amal?’ I stuck a date cookie in each of my pockets when her back was turned. One for me and the other for Abbas.
‘Napping.’ Mama poured the syrup onto the baklava.
‘No, Mama, she’s not in her crib.’
‘Then where is she?’ Mama put the hot pan in the sink and cooled it with water that turned to steam.

Praise for The Almond Tree

“The story is spell-binding with universal appeal…” The Daily Star

” …a strong addition to coming of age fiction collections, highly recommended.” The MidwestBook Review

“…one of the most riveting books I have read… Corasanti takes a realistic premise and builds an interesting and highly believable story that only gets better as the pages fly by. While “The Almond Tree” is a fictional tale, much of it is based on the truth of what is today’s world, and as such there is also an important message located within. I highly recommend this book.”

Review TAKE ME ON by KATIE McGARRY @KatieMcGarry @HarlequinTeen

Book Description

 May 27, 2014

Acclaimed author Katie McGarry returns with the knockout new story of two high school seniors who are about to learn what winning really means

Champion kickboxer Haley swore she'd never set foot in the ring again after one tragic night. But then the guy she can't stop thinking about accepts a mixed martial arts fight in her honor. Suddenly, Haley has to train West Young. All attitude, West is everything Haley promised herself she'd stay away from. Yet he won't last five seconds in the ring without her help.

West is keeping a big secret from Haley. About who he really is. But helping her--fighting for her--is a shot at redemption. Especially since it's his fault his family is falling apart. He can't change the past, but maybe he can change Haley's future.

Haley and West have agreed to keep their relationship strictly in the ring. But as an unexpected bond forms between them and attraction mocks their best intentions, they'll face their darkest fears and discover love is worth fighting for.

**Bonus Content** The novella, Crossing the Line, will be included in the back of Take Me On (both print and e-book editions).

MY THOUGHTS - LOVED IT

West Young, Rachel Young's (from Crash Into Me) older brother has fought his way through life and finally gets kicked out of his private school as well as his home.  He is also on the outs with Rachel since he took the money she had saved to pay off a racing debt and avoid having  Isaiah  beat up.  Instead of thinking thing through, West reacts first, and causes all kinds of problems for himself and others.  As he lives on the streets and enrolls int the local public high school, he learns exactly what his rash actions have cost.  This kid has enough issues for a full subscription.

Haley is a former kickboxing champion who has sworn never to fight again after a break up with her MMA fighter boyfriend.  Driving around, West sees a Haley being harassed by a group of boys.  He stops to talk to her and doesn't listen when she requests that he leave, so she can make it home with her father's prescription, which she loses in the fight that happens after West confronts the boys.  This aggression on his part, sets of a series of events that leads to a MMA fight against her former boyfriend's brother in just a few months.  Haley starts to train him and slowly he gets his life and anger under control.

The way McGarry brings these characters together and works in their heartbreaking background is just phenomenal.  There are lots of interesting supporting characters that I would love to read more about, especially Abby.  As a small time, drug dealer, she has a heart of gold and I am sure it is just as scarred.  The elements of being homeless, losing everything because you don't have health insurance and relying on school lunches as your only meals bring forth a "ripped from the headlines" theme brings home in a heart wrenching way.  Parents:  There is language, violence, mentions of drug and alcohol use, sexual situations.  This books is great way to illustrate all that is wrong in our world right now.

Disclosure I received this book from the publisher at no charge and in no way influenced my review. $50 Giveaway Interview THE ONLY BOY by JORDAN LOCKE @Jordan1Locke @toobusyreading

only boy tou

The only boy The Only Boy by Jordan Locke

Mary is stuck in Section One, living with three hundred women in a crumbling hospital. She wonders what life was like two centuries ago, before the Cleansing wiped out all the men. But the rules—the Matriarch's senseless rules—prevent her from exploring the vacant city to find out. Taylor's got a dangerous secret: he's a boy. His compound's been destroyed, and he's been relocated to Section One. Living under the Matriarch means giving up possessions, eating canned food and avoiding all physical contact. Baggy clothes hide his flat chest and skinny legs, but if anyone discovers what lies beneath, he'll be exiled. Maybe even executed. Mary's never seen a boy—the Matriarch cut the pictures of men from the textbooks—and she doesn't suspect Taylor's secret. If she knew, she might understand the need to stop the girls from teasing him. If she knew, she might realize why she breaks the rules, just to be near him. Then again, she might be frightened to death of him. Taylor should go. The Matriarch is watching his every move. But running means leaving Mary—and braving the land beyond the compound's boundaries.

After everything that has happened, Grace goes to the Everglades to live with her grandmother, Birdee. Even though she is now home-schooled by her bird-obsessed grandmother, the move gives Grace time to relax. She learns to scuba dive and starts boating with old man Rex, Birdee's casual friend/boyfriend.
One day while out in the marshes of the Everglades, Grace rescues an abused Florida panther, currently on the endangered list. The more she dives into the animal’s horrific condition, the more she ventures into the underground world of the roadside zoos that run rampant in Florida with a total disregard for the law. Eventually, she stumbles upon one large roadside zoo filled with a variety of endangered and illegal animals.
Before she can gather evidence and report her findings to the authorities, she is kidnapped by the ruthless owner and dragged deep into the Everglades for a hunting challenge. Only this time, Grace is the prey.
During a sick game of cat and mouse, Grace is offered one chance at survival. With a one-hour head start and very little supplies, time and skill are now all that stands between the hunter and the hunted.

Giveaway Review THE LOVELY AND THE LOST by PAGE MORGAN @PageMorganBooks @RockstarBkTours #BlogTour

Book Description

 May 13, 2014

For readers of Lauren Kate's Fallen series comes the sequel to The Beautiful and the Cursed,The Lovely and the Lost finds the Waverly sisters in mortal danger and able to trust no one. Ingrid and Gabby Waverly moved to France expecting a quiet reprieve from London gossip, but the truth they face in their new home has a sharper--and deadlier--sting. Paris is plagued by an underworld of demons and gargoyles who all seem to want something from the Waverly girls. Saving Ingrid's twin, Grayson, from the fallen angel Axia nearly killed them. And they're still being hunted--only this time, demons aren't their only predators. Ingrid's blood is special: it bestows the power to command gargoyles. It's an ability no other human has, and in the wrong hands, it could be used to send her cursed guardian, Luc, and his fellow Dispossessed to extinction. There are those who will do anything to get Ingrid's blood--and they see no value in human life. The Alliance has vowed to protect the Waverlys, and a new gargoyle has been assigned to guard their abbey home alongside Luc. But no one can watch over Ingrid, Gabby, and Grayson all the time--which means the three must learn to fight for themselves. Because darkness follows the Waverlys. And sometimes darkness comes in the form you trust the most.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

Ingrid is trying to embrace her angel blood while her brother, Grayson struggles with his demon blood and poor Gabby wishes she could fight.  This next installment of The Dispossessed, brings more unrequited love and missed connections I wanted to slap some sense into them all. The story continues as Ingrid decides that she will fight and save her family rather than give in to all of the evil.  Luc has his hands full as he tries to keep all of the Waverly's safe. Ingrid and Luc are almostthisclose to realizing that even though there are rules keeping them apart, it may come down to breaking those rules.

Gabby and Nolan are so attracted to each other, it would be a shame not to see that through and of course, the fathers really try to mess that one up.  Grayson follows Chelle around like a puppy dog and I haven't decided it he can contain himself and get over himself  - talk about a drama queen. Overall, this is a great bridge to the conclusion and I can't wait to find out if the ending of this installment can get me to the ending I would love to see.  Each couple needs to work through tons of issues to come to the right conclusion.  Now, I can't wait until the final installment.

$50 Book Blast MISSING LILY by ANNETTE LARSON @AnnetteKLarson @toobusyreading

missing lily  Missing Lily

You don’t know who I am,” I whispered. He didn’t move—either away from me, or closer—and after an interminable moment, I stepped back and hurried out of the house. He didn’t follow me as I fled into the night. Lylin was not used to being alone—much less alone, hurt, and lost. So when she is separated from her guard and forced to abandon her horse, she counts herself lucky to stumble upon a manor house. Still frightened by those who chased her into the night, she keeps her identity a secret, calling herself Lily as she accepts the help of kind servants, and the compassion of Lord Fallon. When they fall into an easy friendship, she wonders if her secrecy was too hasty. However, as she gets to know the manor and its residents, Lylin discovers that she’s not the only one hiding secrets, and it may be a very good thing that her host doesn’t know her true identity as a member of the royal family.

Author Annette K. Larsen I was born in Utah, part of a crazy, fun family of nine. I grew up in Flagstaff, AZ and St. Louis, MO before striking out on my own college adventure in Virginia. I decided to try my hand at writing novels after I was married and living in Idaho. I write clean romance because it’s my favorite genre, but often difficult to find.
I have Charlotte BrontĂ« to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it. I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

$50 Giveaway THE ALMOND TREE by MICHELLE COHEN CORASANTI @mcohencorasanti

Almond Tree Book CoverThe Almond Tree by Michelle Cohen Corasanti

“An epic drama of the proportions of The Kite Runner… Grabs you from the first page… A gripping and compassionate work of fiction” —Huffington Post The unforgettable story of a young Palestinian boy whose mathematical gifts allow him to escape the difficulties of life as an Arab Israeli, The Almond Tree is a beautifully crafted debut novel written by a Jewish American woman from the perspective of a Palestinian Muslim male.

Praise for The Almond Tree

“The story is spell-binding with universal appeal…” The Daily Star

…a strong addition to coming of age fiction collections, highly recommended.” The MidwestBook Review

I highly recommend this book.” Charline Ratcliff / Rebecca’s Reads
