They have a boat, but they also have a problem: Poseidon can’t swim and is terrified of the water (well, really of the creatures that lurk in its depths). Praise for Heroes in Training
"Readers will gobble this down and look for more, make no mythtake."
~ Kirkus

“This is a fun read, casting Zeus in the role of relatable kid, and there is a nice balance between his primary goal of survival and his sense of destiny and adventure. . . Share this title, and likely more to come, with those still too young for Percy Jackson’s adventures.”
~ School Library Journal

Zeus and the Thunderbolt of Doom (Book 1)

After pulling a magical thunderbolt from a stone, ten-year-old Zeus goes on the adventure of a lifetime in this thrilling start to a brand-new series! The terrible Titans--merciless giants who enjoy snacking on humans--have dominated the earth and put the world into chaos. But their rule is about to be put to the test as a group of young Olympians discover their powers and prepare to righteously rule the universe....

Ten-year-old Zeus is mystified (and super-annoyed) by the fact that he keeps getting hit by lightening. Every. Single. Year. He also longs for adventure, as he has never been far from the cave where he grew up.

Zeus gets his wish--and a lot more than he bargained for--when he is kidnapped by dangerous, giant Titans! In self-defense, he grabs the first thing he sees--an actual thunderbolt he pulls from a stone that is covered in mysterious markings. Zeus is the only one who can decipher the markings, and sets off on a quest to rescue his youthful fellow Olympians from the evil Cronus. Armed with his trusty thunderbolt (named Bolt, of course), Zeus is on an adventure of a lifetime--and a journey to fulfill his destiny as King of the Gods.

Hades and the Helm of Darkness (Book 3 coming April 2013)

The Heroes in Training are entering the Underworld—if Hades can conquer his canine fears, that is.

The Underworld usually isn’t really meant to be a fun place—but tell that to Hades! He loves the dark and the stinky smell of sulfur. However, there is one thing that Hades is not a fan of: dogs. And when Zeus and his fellow Olympians encounter Cerberus—a snarling, three-headed dog—Hades must conquer his fears and tame the hound so everyone can continue into the Underworld and deposit their Titan prisoner, Oceanus, back where he belongs!

But with magical water that causes forgetfulness, hot beds of lava, and another epic battle with two more Titans standing in their way, will Zeus and his heroes make it out of the Underworld with everyone intact?

Author Joan Holub

I graduated from college in Texas with a fine arts degree, and then freelanced as an art director at a graphic design firm for eight years. I dreamed of working in children's books, so I moved to New York City and became associate art director in Scholastic trade books, where I designed books for children and worked with editors and illustrators. It was a great job.

I illustrated my first published children's book in 1992 and soon began illustrating full time. I began completing manuscripts and mailing them out to publishers in the early 1990s. In 1996, I sold my first two manuscripts -- Boo Who? A Spooky Lift-the-Flap Book (Scholastic) and Pen Pals (Grosset & Dunlap). Yippee!

Now I write full time and have written and/or illustrated over 130 children's books. Creating books that entertain, inform, and interest children (and me) is a fabulous job that I truly love.

Giveaway & Review FINGERPRINTS OF YOU by KRISTEN-PAIGE MADONIA @KPMadonia @SimonTeen

Book Description

August 7, 2012

A teen embarks on the road trip of a lifetime in this authentic, beautifully written debut novel.Lemon grew up with Stella, a single mom who wasn’t exactly maternal. Stella always had a drink in her hand and a new boyfriend every few months, and when things got out of hand, she would whisk Lemon off to a new town for a fresh beginning. Now, just as they are moving yet again, Lemon discovers that she is pregnant from a reckless encounter—with a guy Stella had been flirting with.
On the verge of revisiting her mother’s mistakes, Lemon struggles to cope with the idea of herself as a young unmarried mother, as well as the fact that she’s never met her own father. Determined to have at least one big adventure before she has the baby, Lemon sets off on a cross-country road trip, intending not only to meet her father, but to figure out who she wants to be.
Lyrical and moving prose from an original voice whose writing Judy Blume calls “luminous” deftly depicts the nuanced conflicts of early motherhood and the search for identity.

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Lemon was born to her single mother when Stella was only seventeen. The two have been a team since her birth, always drifting from one town to another when her mother decided she had enough with where they were living or a bad breakup with a current boyfriend.  Her unusual name came about because of her mother's artistic inclinations and how she gets hooked on a new color each month. As Lemon drifts through life she decides that she needs to experience sex and her first encounter is with the local stoner boy at her last school.  She finds nothing life altering in the act and thinks maybe another encounter would make her "feel".  As Lemon picks possibly the worst choice, a 27 year old tattoo artist that she meets when Stella wants new ink, she becomes pregnant.

Lemon and Stella move to a new town in West Virginia for her senior year and there Lemon at least makes a friend, Emmy, who will support and encourage her.  For all of the hopelessness of Lemon's life, she never seems feel sorry for herself.  Instead, she always has a book in her hand and finds the good in small things.  She accepts responsibility for the pregnancy and tries to make realistic plans for her and the baby.  This baby makes her think about her own father and she wants to make peace with him and that part of her life before moving forward with her own.  Emmy and Lemon make plans to go to San Francisco on an adventure and Lemon has hope that she can find her father.

As Lemon pages through a maternity book from her mother, she finds a small note with her father's address and finds him once they arrive.  Staying at a dive, Lemon also makes contact with Aiden, a boy who cares for her and treats her how she should be treated.  The meeting with her father, Ryan, is a turning point for Lemon as she finds traits in herself that are directly from her father.  Her love of reading has always been a mystery to her, since her mother never cared much for books.  The moment when Lemon discovers books inscribed by her mother to her father is a turning point for her.

The growth in character and determination is just wonderful. Her relationship with her mother turns into respect when Lemon realizes that her mother isn't as flighty as she first thought.   Emmy sticks by her and never faults her for getting pregnant.  Even when Emmy must cut the trip short because her father is wounded in the Afghanistan war, the pair support each other.  Lemon finding that she is indeed worthy of love and that her mother has always tried to do the best for her was a true revelation.  This is just such a beautifully written story that most teens will enjoy.  Parents:  there is some drinking, language and discussions of sexual situations, but nothing graphic.

PLEASE WELCOME KRISTEN-PAIGE TO BOOKHOUNDS

What is the first book you remember reading by yourself as a child?

I can’t say for certain which was the very first book, but the first one I remember reading by myself repeatedly was Shel Silverstein’s Where the Sidewalk Ends. I’m a firm believer that authors should write to be heard not just read, that it’s crucial to pay attention to the rhythm and sounds of our words, and I’m guessing it was Silvertein’s work that initially instilled that awareness in me.

What are you reading right now?

I tend to read three books at once – a collection of stories, a novel, and a nonfiction book on writing or the publishing industry. So right now the three on my nightstand are Antonya Nelson’s Nothing Right, The Lost Saints of Tennessee by Amy Franklin-Willis, and The Half-Known World: On Writing Fiction by Robert Boswell.

How does your garden grow?

My husband and I plant a vegetable garden every year, and in the spring we enjoy tons of fresh greens in our homemade salads. But sadly, in the summer, my garden typically grows with lots of bug-appeal. We often get aphids and fat black worms that eat all the squash and zucchini leaves. I don’t use any chemicals, so I spend a lot of time in the summer plucking bugs from the plants and vegetables.

What is the last thing you Googled?

I just Googled the 2013 lineup for FloydFest, a summer music festival in Virginia my husband and I go to every year. They announced the initial bands and put tickets on sale this morning!

What makes you cringe?

The sound of bubble gum snapping – it’s funny, when I was a kid my mom used to tell us not to pop bubbles when we chewed gum, and I thought it was so silly that it bugged her. Now it drives me crazy, too.

December 11, 2012 Demon Trappers (Book 4)

In the fourth Demon Trappers novel, Riley faces the final battle for humanity and Beck's heart—and Hell is the least of her problems

Now that Riley’s managed to (just barely) fend off Armageddon, everything’s changed. Well . . . most things. After their passionate kiss before the big battle in the cemetery, Beck is back to treating her like a little girl, as if nothing ever happened. While she’d love to just tell him off and move on, Riley vowed to take care of Beck the way he’s taken care of her since her father’s death—but she’s about to get a whole lot more than she bargained for. When she’s commissioned to go with Beck to his hometown and help him care for his dying mother, they stumble too close to a dark and murderous secret, one that Beck fears will drive Riley away from him forever. As chaos breaks loose, Riley may be Beck's only hope for redemption . . . and survival.

Meanwhile, up in Atlanta, it’s quickly becoming clear that Heaven may have won a battle, but the war is far from over. Riley and Beck face a stormy future, as Lucifer's ex-right-hand-man, Sartael, proves himself to be more resilient than anyone thought. He has Atlanta in his grip and is about to begin a brutal war with the prince of Hell. As the seconds tick down toward a final confrontation, it's up to Riley and the man she loves to finally defeat their old enemy, or lose everything they've fought for.

About the Author
JANA OLIVER is also the award-winning author of the Time Rovers series. She lives in Atlanta, GA with her husband and is happiest when she’s researching outlandish urban legends, wandering around old cemeteries and dreaming up new stories.

Giveaway First Time: The Legend of Garison Fitch by Samuel Ben White WIN $50 to Amazon #BookBlast

First Time: The Legend of Garison Fitch

"What if history didn't happen that way ... the first time?"

Garison Fitch was one of the most revered scientists in the Soviet Americas until he left fame behind to work on a secret project in his log cabin in the mountains of Marx.

But something went wrong. Instead of traveling interdimentionally, Garison has traveled through time ... twice.

Now, he's in something called "The United States of America" and a woman he's never met before is calling herself his wife. It it a hoax? Or, has he somehow changed history?

If so, can he return the world to what he believes is "normal", or must he live in this strange world he created?

Purchase

Praise:

"Sam continues to weave his magic as a storyteller. I always find myself anxious to find out what will happen next and what kind of twist will befall the adventurers. It helps to be familiar with the places that the heroines go, which adds to the story."
~Labdaddy, Texas

"I've had a few very unproductive but enjoyable days thanks to Samuel Ben White. If you haven't read Sam's books you have been missing a treat. These were funny, suspenseful, spiritual and kept you turning the pages."
~Karen S.

"Just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed your books. I have a Kindle and I have purchased all of the Garison Fitch novels. I am in Saudi Arabia and your books have really helped take me away from here."
~Scott, Saudi Arabia

Also Part of the Series:

Saving Time

Two years ago Garison Fitch traveled through time and rewrote history. An accident in the eighteenth century created a whole new world, and even gave Garison a wife he had never met before. Now, he’s got a daughter and he’s coming to enjoy this world he created. Until he’s attacked by men masquerading as Indians, and a funeral procession from out of the past enlists his help, and a tree grows from sappling to full-grown in a matter of minutes, threatening his daughter’s very life. Time itself is unraveling and Garison’s trips through time seem to be the cause. Garison must go back in time once again and keep himself from making the original trip that started the problem. But he can’t use his time machine to go back. How does one sew up a rip in time?

Lost Time

Jason Kerrigan and Brownwyn Dalmouth are pilots with the Republic of Texas Army Air Corps. A world war is going on and bombs have just brought an end to Crockett Air Field in south Texas. Jason and Bronwyn, though, are called away from the battle to be test pilots for a new aircraft that-they're told-will bring the war to an end. The experimental craft lives up to expectations in early tests, but then it lands them somewhere it never should have sent them. Another place? Another time? Another dimension? Somehow, they've taken a trip to the future and changed the past. Or did they? The answer to their change of reality may be known to a Justice of the Peace in Colorado named Garison Fitch. To figure it out, though, Garison may have to team up with his least favorite person: Bat Garrett.

Review LULLABY by AMANDA HOCKING @MacKidsBooks @amanda_hocking

Book Description

November 27, 2012 Watersong Novels (Book 2)

Harper only wanted a safe, normal life. But when her younger sister Gemma runs off with a dangerous clique of beautiful girls, Penn, Thea, and Lexi, everything changes. Vowing to get her sister back no matter what the cost, Harper must face dangers unlike any she's ever experienced. Fortunately, she has Daniel by her side, a gorgeous guy who's devoted to helping her find her sister—and who's immune to the girls' dark powers.

While Harper searches for her sister, Gemma struggles to adjust to her new life.  Gemma's powers are growing by the day, and the longer she lives with her new "sisters," the harder it is to resist entering their magical world.  It's a realm both dark and beautiful, and where she's plagued by strange hungers and unspeakable needs.  Just as she's drifting far away from her old life,  Harper and Daniel find her...but no one can deny how much she's changed.  All she wants is to return to her family and the mortal world, but how can she do that when she's become something else entirely—and will they still love her once they learn the truth?

Prepare to fall under the spell of Lullaby, the second book in the Watersong series from New York Times bestselling author Amanda Hocking.

MY THOUGHTS
LOVED IT

****spoilers if you haven't read Wake****

This book picks up right after the ending of Wake.  Gemma has gone with the other three sirens since their leader, Penn, has threatened harm to her family and friends.  The story centers much more around her older sister, Harper, and Harper's quest to find Gemma and bring her to safety.  This one alternates between Harper and Gemma's point of view.  Penn is probably the most evil mean girl I have ever read about and again this story continues with  the Slasher Movie goodness.  There were a lot of "don't do it" and "something bad is going to happen here" type shouts from me.   I read this quick and easy read in about 3 hours, so yes, it really kept my attention!

I am glad I got to know Harper a bit better and Hocking does a wonderful job filling out her character.  Like all second books in a series, this one is a bit more quiet and not so full of action until I was left hanging at the end of the book.  Of course, that is just to keep me reading the rest of the series.
Even Gemma becomes more authentic in this installment. The boys surrounding the girls, Alex and Daniel try their best to help Harper out getting Gemma back home.  They may have a few gifts of their own that might help Gemma but those are only alluded to towards the end of the book.

I also loved Marcy, Harper's coworker at the library and her snarky comments. Not everything works like she thinks it should and that is part of Marcy's charm.  Now, if Harper can get over the fact that she can't be responsible for Gemma any more than this series will take off.  I did miss Nathalie, the girls' mother, not having that strong in this one. I hope she makes more of an appearance in the next.   I think I enjoyed this one more than the first since the writing seemed to flow a bit better and it was as cartoony as the first.  Parents there is some heavy petting, mentions of alcohol, although no drinking and some violence.

Book Description

November 14, 2012

Four disparate high school seniors come together to compete in their school's battle of the bands. Sharing a love for playing rock and roll, the members name the band "The Stereotypical Freaks" because they feel stereotyped by their classmates - smart kid, geek, star athlete and quiet weirdo… when in fact they know they are much more than those labels that have been placed on them. When one member reveals life altering news, winning the competition takes on more of a meaning to each member. Scared and angry, upset and yet still with a lot of resolve they set out to win one for the good guys… will they?

MY THOUGHTS
ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT

Tom and Dan fool around in the basement playing along to their favorite music.  While Tom (smart kid) can sing and play keyboards, Dan (geek) is a kick ass bass player, but they are missing a guitar player and drummer.  Tom's dad sits in with them every once in awhile but with a battle of the bands coming up at the high school, they really want to get their act together and perform.  Tom's best friend while growing up is an excellent guitar player but he is busy trying to get a football scholarship.  When Tom starts to tutor Marcell, now known as Mark (jock), he reconnects with him and convinces him to play.  Jacoby (quiet weirdo), a new kid at the school, loves to play drums, but he has scheduling conflicts that prevent him from practicing.

The group really starts to come together and each member seems to have a secret reason for wanting this band to succeed.  The story covers a range of emotions and attitudes, from bullying, secret crushes and illness.  When Jacoby admits he is suffering from incurable cancer, the guy really rally around him and don't realize how much the performance means to him until they visit him at home right before he passes away.  (Big Sob).  The whole story is very sweet without being saccharine.  It is the type of book that gets the point about how we should treat each other and doesn't get all preachy.  I loved the graphics that went along with the story and you get an even better feel for the characters.  I don't think the story would have worked as well had it not been manga.

I was fascinated with the excellent choice of music that Shapiro put together with each chapter.  It really captured the mood and setting. The author is kindly letting me list the music here so you can get a feel of the range of emotions the story covers.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We are cooking today!  I am trying Alton Brown's roast turkey recipe.  Getting THAT started was a true comedy of errors.  I turned the ice maker OFF instead of on, so at the last minute I had to rush to the store to buy ice for the brine.   I can't tell you how wonderful the brine smells! Schatze will be nearby to clean up any messes in case I drop the turkey.

Hope everyone has a wonderful day filled with thanks, gratitude and family!  I am so thankful for all of the wonderful people I have met online and share my love of reading.
